The University of Akureyri, UNAK, is a state university that has served Akureyri and its rural surrounding since 1987. UNAK offers programmes in School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Health Sciences, School of Business and Science. It has a well-established distance learning programmes with more than half of the 2300 students enrolled in flexible learning.

UNAK in the Arctic

UNAK offers the only Arctic study programme in Iceland, Polar Law, where emphasis is placed on areas of international and domestic law concerning the Polar regions. The program offers a variety of courses taught in English. UNAK also offers studies in Arctic issues as a part of other studies in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Numerous other courses with strong Arctic ties are tought in the school, for example in the School of Health Sciences and School of Business and Science.

UNAK was a founding member of the University of the Arctic, a cooperative network of universities, colleges, and other organizations committed to higher education and research in the North. It also has extensive cooperation in Arctic issues, for example through the UArctic Thematic Networks which fosters issues-based cooperation within networks which are focused but flexible enough to respond quickly to topical Arctic issues.

Main publications and reports

The policy of the University of Akureyri is to strengthen the university as a scientific institute by among other things creating a forum for employees to publish their research and scientific work both in print and digital form.

Most of the research work is done by the academic members of the staff and research administration is in the hand of RHA - University of Akureyri Research Centre. In addition the University has six research institutes: Research Centre on Childrens Literature, Research Centre on Health Science at UNAK, Centre of School Development at UNAK, Icelandic Tourism Research Centre, Research Centre Against Violence, Fisheries Science Centre.
